Featured Woman: Janet Gipson

I recently sat down with Janet Gipson– VP of DISH Sales and Marketing– to discuss the recent launch of SlingStudio, her career path, and advice she has for those looking to navigate their own!

Q: Congratulations on the recent SlingStudio launch! It’s so exciting to see our leadership team being recognized and supported across the company. Many junior women are working towards multi-year career plans. What advice do you have for these women to set themselves up for success and proactively seek opportunity?

A: Thank you!  SlingStudio is an exciting product and really demonstrates the commitment to innovation with DISH.  I am excited about the potential for new markets that we have untapped with this new product.

My advice is simple-  the best thing you can do is to take every assignment seriously and deliver your best work.  You will build your ‘living resume’ and support your growth and desire to move up within the company.  Any cross-functional team that you participate in or initiative               that you’ve been tapped to manage allows you to build your brand and therefore set the foundation for future positions that you may seek.  No job or task is too small to consider this.  … Read more and comment

Featured Woman – Patti Fries

As part of the DISH Women’s Network, we highlight key players on the DISH Leadership Team; this lets us all see the best practices and habits that have contributed to their successes. We sat down with Patti Fries, newly promoted Director of Consumer Insights at DISH, to chat about her career path, recent promotion, and overarching advice for women navigating their careers.

Born and raised in small-town Nebraska, Patti wanted from a young age to learn more about what interested her most: people. After studying Marketing, Management, and Japanese at the University of Nebraska, she pursued her master’s degree in International Management at the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Arizona. She met fellow students from diverse walks of life, with over 90 countries represented in her classmates.

Asked about advice she has for career-focused individuals, Patti provides more context on her upbringing. Raised by a father who fostered a love of learning, Patti has consistently followed her curiosity. “Find something you are passionate about, and use that passion to create change you believe in” she said. For Patti, this began at Thunderbird, where she was offered a hands-on experience to design the ad launch for NordicTrack fitness equipment

The Coxless Crew – One Boat, One Ocean, FOUR Women

Yesterday, a team of women arrived in Australia, ending their 8,446 mile unsupported journey of rowing across the Pacific Ocean in a 29 foot rowing boat from America to Australia. This journey began in April 2015 and has never been done before by an all-female crew. Their vision was to inspire others to reach their own potential and support women that have had to face extreme adversity.  Their goal was to raise money for Walking with the Wounded and Breast Cancer Care survivors.

The journey consisted of 6 core values: Strength, Perseverance, Integrity, Resilience, Inspiration and Trust (SPIRIT). Sir Ranulph Fiennes, an ambassador to this journey, stated:  “Always during a journey into the unknown there are moments when we want to turn back, when we lose sight of our direction and even our purpose.” These women were determined to achieve their goal, did not let anything get in their way and overcame a huge mental and physical undertaking. The DISH Women’s Network applauds this group of women and is proud to feature them on our blog. We look to these types of women who portray strength and bravery. This accomplishment

Featured Woman – Sruta Vootukuru

Sruta Vootukuru

November’s featured woman of the month is our own Sruta Vootukuru, Sling TV’s Vice President of Business Development and Operations, who was just named as one of Cablefax’s Most Powerful Women! We had the honor of having Sruta speak at our Leader Series back in August, and we sat down with her again to congratulate her on her awe-inspiring accomplishment and gather more insight as to what makes her one of the most powerful women in the TV industry.

 1. Congratulations on being named to CableFax’s “Most Powerful Women in Cable”! What do you attribute to this achievement?

I take nothing for granted. I approach all professional obstacles realistically, strategically, and tirelessly, but I’m not deterred by the failures in the process.

2. If you could give one piece of career advice to women, what would it be?

Be “you” and stay authentic to what makes you unique.  Do it right by the business and by the team, and everything else takes care of itself!

3. What motivates you to come to work every day?

My team, the promise of what this business can be tomorrow, and the opportunity to be part of it and contribute

Featured Woman – Tosha Zeitlin

Tosha Zeitlin, Director of Service Management

Each month we aim to recognize a woman who embodies the spirit of the DISH Women’s Network. This month, Michelle and I wanted to feature Tosha Zeitlin. Without Tosha’s support over the past two months, the network website would not exist. She carved time out of her crazy schedule, often working nights, to help us launch dishwomensnetwork.com. From hand drawing potential logos, to sitting for hours with Michelle and I to brainstorm the look and feel of the site, she constantly lead the charge to ensure this website would be industry leading. It was an honor working with such a driven, intelligent woman. For these reasons, and many more, Tosha is our first featured woman of the month. We sat down with her to ask her some questions to give you more insight into who Tosha Zeitlin is as a person and professional, and why we chose to feature her this month. Enjoy.

Who/what is your biggest inspiration?

I am inspired by passionate people, like Steve Jobs, Marissa Mayer, and Sheryl Sanberg to name a few. When someone is able to demonstrate what they are passionate about and let nothing, or anyone, stand
